Archaeological Assessment and Testing of the Lepera Subdivision
Kingsville, Ontario

In response to an archaeological condition placed on the development of a residential subdivision in Southwestern Ontario, CRM Group was retained by Dillon Consulting to conduct an archaeological assessment of the 38 hectare property. Since the proposed development fell completely within agricultural fields, CRM Group relied on visual assessment of the ploughed and weathered fields in its search for archaeological resources.

The assessment yielded evidence of numerous isolated finds, a scatter of late historic artifacts and two early Aboriginal sites. To evaluate the potential significance of the two Aboriginal sites, archaeological testing was conducted to determine their age, size, function and integrity. Despite the scattered presence of flakes and some stone tools on the ground surface, subsurface testing of the sites failed to provide evidence of significant archaeological resources. Based on the recommendations presented by CRM Group, the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation has cleared the property of any further archaeological conditions and approved its development.
